Latent R. examines the quiet grief of a life lived between two timelines, the pull of a wild youth that refuses to fade and the present moment that keeps moving forward regardless. The work portraits a particular kind of melancholy: the fifty-something who still shows up, still dances, still orders another round, yet somewhere between the second and third drink begins eulogizing a version of themselves that no longer exists.

Through obsessive pen and ink mark-making, the piece visualizes memory as suffocating density, intricate, interlocking forms that press inward from every direction, leaving only fragmented open space at the center. That void is not emptiness. It is the shape of what was. The biomorphic chaos surrounding it suggests the relentless accumulation of time, experience, and nostalgia layering over a self that once felt infinite.

The doodle-inspired mark-making evokes the texture of late-night conversation, stories told too many times, growing more embellished with each telling, the past becoming more vivid than the present it displaces. What reads as playful on the surface carries an unmistakable undertow of longing. Forever young, but at a cost. The party continues; the ghost of who you were attends every one.

Latent R. does not judge this condition. It simply renders it visible—the bittersweet persistence of a self that peaked somewhere in the past and has been negotiating with that fact ever since.

Part of the ongoing Latent Space series examining pre-cognitive and emotional states through drawing-as-research methodology.
